Home working health and safety issues

When a call centre operator decides to adopt home working, top of a long list of concerns raised by the HR department is Health & Safety (H&S).

As the employer of the home worker, you are responsible for the Health & Safety of your home workers. This is in itself quite a minefield: after all, you become responsible for a person in their home over which you have little, if no, direct control. It's a big responsibility to which, inevitably, you will need to give serious consideration.

Home working has been gradually rising up the corporate agenda. The disillusionment with offshoring and outsourcing, as well as the well advertised success of home working in North America, has helped businesses realise that home working could be the next step in the evolution of their call centre operating model.

The benefits of home working are now well proven. So why isn't everyone pursuing home working? A lot of organisations have tried, but sadly failed. Indeed, according to a recent report by Gartner Group, sixty per cent of organisations that have tried home working have not been successful. Furthermore, those who do succeed generally have limited success, with long ROI and much smaller savings than expected.
